A 61-year-old Vermont woman was reportedly saved from a black bear that was biting her leg when her Jack Russell terrier started barking and caught the animal’s attention, according to a Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department news release.
Susan Lee reported to wildlife authorities that on August 20, while walking her two dogs—a Jack Russell terrier and a labradoodle—on a trail on her property in Strafford, she heard a “loud noise” and was then charged by a black bear, tripping her over a stone wall.
When she felt “pain on her upper left leg,” she understood the bear had bit her. The bear’s attack was stopped when her Jack Russell terrier started barking at it.
Lee was able to extricate his leg because the bear was distracted by the barking. Before dialing 911, she and her dogs were able to travel further down the route. She was transported to Gifford Medical Center with the help of a neighbor, where she received non-life-threatening medical care before being released.

In a press release, it was stated that Lee had many scrapes on both legs that ranged in length from two to nine inches in addition to a bit wound on her left leg.
Wildlife authorities found that the bear was a mother with cubs who had been startled and disturbed by Lee and her dogs. They failed to find the bear.
Lee’s Jack Russell terrier didn’t sustain any wounds. According to Game Warden Sgt. Jeffrey Whipple of USA Today, the dog used “ninja movements” to keep safe.
If I had to hazard a guess as to what could have occurred if the dog hadn’t been present, Whipple asserted that the bear would have caused Lee more harm. The bear would have gotten off her and fled, though, once she was knocked to the ground and out of the fight.
With one bear for every three square miles, Vermont boasts one of the nation’s densest black bear populations, according to the website of the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department.
It is the only species of bear that may be found in Vermont, where there are about 6,000 of them. According to Jaclyn Comeau, a bear biologist with the Wildlife Department, the attacks on humans are “very unusual” because the bears are shy and rarely encountered by people. According to the government, there have only ever been three bear assaults in the state.
However, Comeau noted in a statement that moms will guard their babies because black bears travel in family groups at this time of year. “It is imperative to maintain composure and carefully move away when a bear approaches, and to strike back right away if attacked.”
